Notes:
Niger gained its independence from France in 1960.

It has been rated by the UN as the least developed nation in the world.

In addition, Niger is one of the world’s poorest countries and has one of the lowest literacy rates.

This nation banned slavery just recently in 2003, but reports state that thousands still live in slavery.

A drought and locust infestation led to food shortages for as many as 2.5 million Nigerians in 2005.

Niger’s government has granted considerable freedom of religion and few restrictions on missions exist. However, Islamic fundamentalists have been working toward the adoption of shari’a law.

Even in the good seasons, 90% of the population lives at a bare subsistence level.

Prayer:
Pray for an increase in the number of churches and people coming to Christ. The country is open to the Gospel, but the response until this point has been small.

There is a great need for increase in training and maturity among Christian leaders. Pray that Christian workers would grow in unity and that their lives would continually reflect the Gospel.

As many as 14 people groups within Niger are still unreached. Pray for more foreign and indigenous missionaries to be sent to minister to these groups.

Pray for an increase in ministries at schools and colleges. In general, young people have been the most responsive to the gospel, but relatively few programs are targeting this population.

Pray for wisdom for Christians, that they would find creative ways to share the gospel, as illiteracy and poverty present severe limitations.
