| Notes Senegal gained its independence from France in 1960 and is now seen as one of the most stable democracies in Africa. It is also seen as a major peacekeeper within the region, as it has sent troops to DR Congo, Liberia, and Kosovo. However, major internal conflicts exist within the nation. ¼ of the population lives in the capital of Dakar. This country is a major location for the southwest and southeast Asian heroin trade, as well as the movement of cocaine to Europe and South America. Senegal is a secular nation which allows the freedom of religion. However, the Muslim majority carries a great deal of power in political and economic arenas. The Muslim population grew from 45% in 1900 to over 92% of the total population in 2000. Since 2001, there has been an increase in attacks on Christians and churches. In 2003, the president proposed making Senegal a 100% Muslim nation. Approximately 54% of the population lives below the poverty line. Prayer Pray that Muslim extremist attacks against Christians would cease and religious freedom would remain. Pray for significant breakthrough of the Gospel with key Muslim leaders in the government and economy.
